Eight performers. Zero instruments. Infinite trust.
Octet, Dave Malloy’s electrifying a cappella musical, strips theatre down to its barest essentials—voice, breath, and connection and dives headfirst into our collective relationship with technology, addiction, community, and connection. It’s dense, funny, uncomfortable, devastating, and unexpectedly hopeful—all told through harmonies that feel like they’re rewiring your brain in real time. At Studio Theatre, I’m honored to be understudying the roles of Paula and Karly, stepping into a piece that demands both musical precision and emotional honesty at every turn.
At Studio Theatre, Octet is being brought to life under the direction of David Muse, with music direction by Ben Moss. This piece demands an extraordinary level of musical precision and emotional presence from its eight performers. We rely on one another in a way that mirrors the very themes of the show: how we connect, how we support, and how we sometimes fail—and try again.
Octet doesn’t offer easy answers. Instead, it invites the audience into a space of reflection, asking big questions about the digital age and what it means to be human inside of it. It’s intimate, intellectually stimulating, and deeply moving—and it stays with you long after the final chord fades.
Octet runs at Studio Theatre from February 14th through March 8th.
Come lean in. Come listen closely. Come experience what happens when eight voices tell a story that feels uncomfortably close to home.
